Understanding the Challenge
Healthcare systems are under immense strain due to a severe shortage of skilled professionals combined with a rising number of patients. Nurses, in particular, face the challenge of managing numerous tasks independently under constant time pressure. They must organize their shifts, prioritize care activities, and respond to unexpected situations often without sufficient digital support. This leads to stress, inefficiency, and less time for meaningful patient interaction.
Defining the Goal
The aim was to design a system that gives nurses structure and clarity throughout their shifts while maintaining flexibility. It should provide a real-time overview of tasks, help prioritize urgent actions, and adapt dynamically to changing conditions, all without adding additional complexity or distraction.
We developed a smartwatch interface that intelligently organizes and prioritizes daily nursing tasks. The AI-based system sorts tasks based on urgency, estimated duration, and proximity, ensuring that nurses can focus on what matters most at any given moment.
secura enables quick, intuitive interactions - perfectly suited for the fast paced and hands on nature of nursing. Each nurse receives a personalized plan for the shift, providing both structure and autonomy. This solution reduces cognitive load, prevents stress, and enhances the overall workflow, allowing nurses to dedicate more time to patient care.
Through collaboration with students from the Digital Healthcare and Nursing Management program at Neu-Ulm University of Applied Sciences, we were able to conduct usability testing with experts in our field. Their professional insights and hands-on experience provided valuable perspectives on the real challenges faced in nursing. Based on their feedback, we refined key features of our prototype, such as the drag-and-drop task management and the color-coded alert system with visual indicators for urgent tasks.
